Class Expectations

The Bear Necessities

The standard of conduct followed by the school

  1. Come to class prepared - wear tennis shoes to P.E. class

  2. Listen and follow directions

  3. Show respect to the teacher

  4. Show respect to others

  5. Use appropriate language and gestures

  6. Respect school property

Class Dojo

Class dojo is a big part of the school. Class dojo is a great communication tool to let you know how your child is doing in class. I strongly encourage you to sign up with your homeroom teacher if you have not already.

I have a 3 point system for every class to earn dojo points as a whole on a daily basis

  1. How the students come into class

  2. Staying on task with minimal disruption during the lesson

  3. How students line up at the end of class

Students can earn individual points through out the class period as well lose dojo points depending upon their actions.

School story on dojo is where school wide announcements can posted to inform parents about upcoming activities/events

Class Discipline

I am giving you an idea how I handle most situations in the classroom. In the gym it can be very active and loud. To ensure the most effective instruction and maximize the students time in the gym the following steps are provided below.

Get the groups attention 1 of 3 ways:

  1. Class signal: If you can hear me, Clap once… if you can hear me, clap twice… if you can hear me, clap three times.

  2. Teacher voice interrupts the music playing while the students are active.

  3. Score clock will be on 0:00 and a horn will sound

Students should stop, drop and listen

  • Most of the time I give an additional group warning by saying

    • “eyes on me please”

    • “ I am waiting on you”

    • “hands up” to ensure no equipment is in their hands

    • I will give compliments to students who are doing the right thing

    • I tell them no more warnings

Individual warning: When students are still distracted or distracting to others

I will ask student to stand on the line to ensure I have their attention so they can perform the task or game for the day. Students are NOT in trouble for standing on the line.

Some examples to stand on the line:

  • Eyes not focused on the teacher

  • Talking

  • Hands on equipment

Time out: Students who are having difficulty and had to stand on the line 2 times…they will have to sit out for 5 minutes and a Dojo point will be taken away. I take points away according to each homeroom list. Most of the time points are taken away from not following directions or being off task.

Claw Marks: Claw Marks are given to students who have two Dojo points taken away during a class period. If a student receives a claw mark they “owe Coach” 15 minutes of their Happy Day or another event of the Coaches’ choice.

  • Students not wearing appropriate shoes to gym class will receive a claw mark. = 2 Dojo Points taken away

  • 3 claw marks during a nine week period will result in your child receiving an “N” on his/her report card.

Office referrals: I try to keep office referrals to a minimum but sometimes students’ actions in the classroom must seek a stronger consequence.

• Students who are fighting or bulling other students will result in an office referral

Class Procedures

How students come into the gym:

 Grades 3-5

  1. Sit on their class lines ( subs will do this one)

  2. Perform the warm up activity for the day or running stretches on the screen (I will not have these for a sub)

  3. Teacher will have students get into groups as they walk in the gym. Students may have to perform exercises that are posted on the screen or perform the Fitnessgram test as a review.

  • When instructions are not posted on the screen and kids do not know what to do, they should always sit on their line and wait for instruction

Grades k-2

  1. Sit on their class lines ( subs will do this one)

  2. Perform the running stretches on the screen (Grades 1-2 only…I will not have these for a sub)

  3. Teacher will number students as they walk into the gym and assign them a group/station

  4. Perform task that the teacher gives the students as a warm up (Teacher only not sub)

  • Throwing and catching against the wall

  • Striking balls underhand against the wall

  • Perform little tags games lead by the teacher

Students can come into the gym and talk while they are sitting down but need to settle down when the teacher is ready and has given the class signal

What not to do:

  1. Students do not come into the gym and touch equipment or run around and play tag.

    • These are automatic Dojo points that will be taken away for not following directions or being off task.

  2. Students are not allowed to let others in the gym.

    • Students must always check with the teacher in charge.

    • If it is another adult at the door, the teacher will let the adult in the gym.

    • The teacher may give the students permission to let another child in the gym after the students had asked for permission.

Bathroom Procedures

Students MUST ask to use the Bathroom!

  • Students ask to use the bathroom on their time which is play time.

  • I don’t want students to have an accident in the gym. If a child has an emergency and cannot wait, he/she can ask during instruction time.

  • If a child ask during instruction time, he/she can go but will have to sit on the stage to see how the game is played. The teacher will make sure the student knows the rules of the game before he/she will play.

  • Students will take the bathroom pass and hang it under the Boys / Girls sign located outside the bathroom area under the red sign.

  • 1 boy and 1 girl student are allow to use the restroom at a time.

  • Students MUST return the bathroom pass and hang back where they got the it from in the gym (near the red box hanging on the wall.)

Hall Pass Procedures

Students MUST use the Hall Pass to get into the main building!

  1. Students may get called to the office to check out while in gym.

    • The teacher will have another student escort the child to the door of the main building and return back to class. If there is another adult in class, he/she will escort the child to the building.

  2.   Students may get hurt when participating in class

    • Students can use the hall pass to get ice from the main office

    • The teacher will radio the main office to let them know which child is coming and what they need

Put the hall passes back on the white magnetic hooks on the red box in the corner of the gym.

Water Pass Procedures

Students MUST use the water pass to get water in the gym lobby!

  • There are 3 water passes so students can get water without asking during play time

  • Student should not get water during instruction time

  • Students should use water breaks wisely taking only 1-2 breaks during class time

  • Students MUST return the pass to wall near the red box in the corner of the gym.

  • Students are not allowed to get water at the end of class when they are lining up.  This helps with a smoother transition at the end of class

  • Teachers will stop for water and bathroom breaks before they get back to class.
